Flower Runner Pattern

Materials: Crochet string, hook. Sample used J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball each of  lilac, mint green and ecru. Used size 5 steel crochet hook. Made 20 squares.

Stitches: U.S. terminology

ch = chain   sc = single crochet    dc = double crochet   hdc = half double crochet   trc = triple crochet   sp = space   sl = slip   st(s) = stitch(es)   rnd = round    beg = beginning   sk = skip

Square: (Squares are joined on last rnd as they are worked.)

Rnd 1: Using color A string, ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, sc in beg sc, (ch 3, sc in next sc) 7 times.

Rnd 3: Sl st to ch-3 sp, ch 3, holding last loop of each trc on hook, 3 trc in beg ch-3 sp, yarn over hook, pull through all 4 loops on hook – beg 4-trc cluster made, ch 5, * holding last loop of each trc on hook, 4 trc in next ch-3 sp, yarn over hook, pull through all 5 loops on hook – 4-trc cluster made, ch 3, 4-trc cluster in next ch-3 sp, ch 5, repeat from * twice; 4-trc cluster in last ch-3 sp, ch 3, sl st in top of beg trc cluster.  Cut yarn and fasten.

Rnd 4: Using color B string, make a slip knot on hook and join with an sc in ch-5 sp, (ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) in beg ch-5 sp, *4 dc in next ch-3 sp, (4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) in next ch-5 sp, repeat from * twice, 4 dc in next ch-3 sp, 1 dc in beg ch-5 sp, sl st in top of  beg ch-2.

Rnd 5: Slip st in each of next 2 sts, [(sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in next st, hdc in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, trc in next st, ch 4, trc in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next st] 4 times; sl st in beg sc. Cut yarn and fasten.

Rnd 6 (first square): Using color C string, make a slip knot on hook to join, [(sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-3 sp, sc in each of next 4 sts, sk next 3 sts, (6 trc, ch 5, 6 trc) in ch-4 sp, sk next 3 sts, sc in each of next 4 sts] 4 times; sl st in beg sc. Cut yarn and fasten.

Rnd 6 (joining 1 or 2 sides): Using color C string, make a slip knot on hook to join, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-3 sp, sc in each of next 4 sts, sk next 3 sts, (6 trc, ch 2, sc in ch-5 sp of corresponding square wrong sides together, ch 2, 6 trc) in ch-4 sp, * sk next 3 sts, sc in each of next 4 sts, (sc, ch 1, sc in ch-3 sp of corresponding square, ch 1, sc) in ch-3 sp, sc in each of next 4 sts, sk next 3 sts, (6 trc, ch 2, sc in ch-5 sp of corresponding or diagonal square if more than one, ch 2, 6 trc) in ch-4 sp, repeat from * once if joining 2 sides, then continue same as first square. If joining 1 side, do not repeat from *, continue same as first square.

Finishing: Weave in all loose ends.

Variation for 4 colors:

Rnd 1: Using color D string, ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, sc in beg sc, (ch 3, sc in next sc) 7 times. Cut yarn and fasten.

Rnd 3: Using color A string, make a slip knot on hook and join with an sc in ch-3 sp, ch 2, holding last loop of each trc on hook, 3 trc in beg ch-3 sp, yarn over hook, pull through all 4 loops on hook – beg 4-trc cluster made, ch 5, * holding last loop of each trc on hook, 4 trc in next ch-3 sp, yarn over hook, pull through all 5 loops on hook – 4-trc cluster made, ch 3, 4-trc cluster in next ch-3 sp, ch 5, repeat from * twice; 4-trc cluster in last ch-3 sp, ch 3, sl st in top of beg trc cluster.  Cut yarn and fasten.

Rnds 4-6: Same as main pattern.

Variation for solid color:

Rnds 1-3: Same as main pattern. Do not cut yarn and fasten.

Rnd 4: Sl st to ch-5 sp, sc in beg ch-5 sp, continue same as main pattern to end.

Rnd 5: Same as main pattern to end. Do not cut yarn and fasten.

Rnd 6: (Sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-3 sp, continue same as main pattern to end.
